The Makers Diet
The Makers Diet is a plan designed for the “whole person” by addressing all the components that make up an individual – physical, mental, spiritual and emotional.
The plan was developed by Jordan Rubin through research into historical and biblical texts that advocate certain foods as being key to healthy living. The Makers Diet is based on the premise that we were designed to eat and to live a certain way, and that through modern society and science we have lost touch with the aspects of simple healthy living that should be our birthright.
The Bible as Nutritionist
The Makers Diet takes us back to the principals for healthy eating outlined in the bible. This includes eating certain types of fish (those with fins and scales) but not those with smooth skin or hard shells (lobsters, crab, etc.). It also advocates eating beef and other types of meat originating from an animal with a split hoof that chew a cud, but omitting pork because the Bible cites swine as being “unclean”.
It might sound a little militant, but if you stop to think about these recommendations they aren’t so different from those of modern day doctors and health practitioners. After all, many nutritionists will tell you to go easy on high fat foods, including shellfish and pork. The diet also focuses heavily on the principal of eating whole, unprocessed foods - and it’s difficult for anyone to deny that our bodies were meant to operate on whole grains rather than Cheese Puffs!
40 Days and 40 Nights
The Makers Diet is a 40-day plan to greater health and well-being. And although the 40-day biblical reference is obvious, the program is actually divided into four phases.
In Phase One you will correct harmful imbalances by cleansing your body and eliminating the foods and/or chemicals to which your body is addicted. This might include things like caffeine and sugar. Bringing your body into greater balance is accomplished through learning to make healthier food choices, being attentive to your immune system, and finding a spiritual connection to give your life purpose and meaning.
As you leave behind the more restrictive patterns of Phase One, Phase Two incorporates a greater variety of food as you become accustomed to making choices that will result in optimal health for your body and spirit. You should already be experiencing some of the benefits of The Makers Diet, including more energy and a decreasing waist line!
Phase Three begins on the 29th day of the program, and allows you to re-introduce a greater variety of previously eliminated foods. By now your blood sugar should be in balance and your immune system fully restored. Phase Three encourages healthful, balanced eating from each of the food groups – which means more variety than ever!
Once you’ve reached Day 40 of The Makers Diet you will have officially begun the maintenance phase, Wellness for Life. This isn’t a phase with a finite ending, but a plan to maintain the overall health you’ve achieved during the 40 day plan.
